Classic Chili Recipe

This is our family chili recipe. It’s simple. It’s so good. And it’s always a major crowd pleaser. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but toot toot. This chili recipe won a chili contest…at my husband’s work…against like 4 others. But I am taking that win. I am proud.

Seriously though, this is a really good chili. I am not a major spicy fan so I tend to make it more mild and then Dave will add some spice straight to the bowl. It also has a sweet secret ingredient and you won’t be shocked to know that it’s sugar. A little bit of the sweet stuff to balance the savory and the spice. It’s so perfect!

Filled with tons of beef, tomatoes and beans. Then top it with your favorite stuff. My personal choices are cheese and Fritos. Gotta have the Fritos. Plus, if you’re in Nebraska don’t forget the Cinnamon Rolls.

  • prep time: 10 minutes
  • cook time: 4-8 hours
  • total time:4-8 hours and 10 minutes

Servings: 6-8

Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef, browned and drained

1/2 onion, chopped

1 large can crushed, diced or whole tomatoes

1 can of tomato sauce

2 cans dark red kidney beans, drained

Chili powder to taste

1/2 to 1 Tablespoon sugar

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet, brown your ground beef until no longer pink. Drain grease. Pour beef into a crock pot or large soup pot.

  2. Then add all the other ingredients into the crockpot. If using canned whole tomatoes, cut up into chunks.

  3. Mix all together, taste to see if you want more chili powder. Then set the crock pot to low for 4-8 hours. Or in a large pot on low. The longer the better.

  4. Serve with shredded cheese, Fritos, crackers, sour cream. So many options!
